Pine Creek Gorge Slot Canyon
To us here in the Wellsboro area, the canyon is a precious and gorge-ous natural resource. Its geology is severe and stunning, it is worth visiting and spending time here, that’s why we call it the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, and that’s why we share it with people from all over the World. Pine Creek in Zion National Park forms a slot canyon that runs parallel to Utah State Highway 9 in the gorge below Mount Carmel Tunnel. Tourists gaze across the canyon daily, often unaware that the thin, dark crevice below is a glimpse into an entirely different world.
Pine Creek Gorge, Pennsylvania Also known as ‘Pensylvania’s Grand Canyon’, Pine Creek Gorge is almost 50 miles long and the maximum depth is 1450 feet (at Waterville). Ideal for nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts alike, think steep canyon walls, waterfalls and scenic hiking, surrounded by 165,000 acres of Tioga State Forest. Most gorges don’t have taglines. And Pine Creek’s — “The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania” — is a lot to live up to. But this swath of land is pretty damn impressive: 47 miles long, up to a mile wide.

The Pine Creek Gorge Natural Area is considered class II (out of 5) whitewater. It is generally pretty easy to float most of the year. The place where most people have problems is near Colton Point and Leonard Harrison State Parks. There are some class rapids in that particular section that catch people off guard.
If you capsize or flip over in your boat remember:
1)Always wear your PFD (lifejacket). Never take it off while on the water! Wear your wetsuit or drysuit if water temperatures are cold.
2)Lie on your back and point your feet downstream.
3)Stay upstream of your boat at all times.
4)Rescue people first, then equipment.
5)Keep going! It only gets easier after the parks.
If you find yourself wet & cold and in need of a warm up please consider your own body temperature. If you jog or start doing jumping jacks on the shore you will find your body temperature rise naturally. The idea is to be a self-rescuer and not depend on others.
Cell phone coverage is almost completely non existent in the Pine Creek Gorge Natural Area. Do not depend on modern technology for help in emergencies.
